European Seafood Media Visit Prince Edward Island
As part of ongoing business development initiatives in the seafood industry, seafood journalists visited PEI June 9 & 10, 2010. The European delegation included: Yannick Dheilly - Trade Commissioner, France; Bruno Vautour - Seafood Journalist, France; and Nicki Holmyard - Seafood Journalist, Scotland.

The group met with officials from the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Rural Development and Innovation PEI, as well as representatives from the PEI Fisherman's Association and the PEI Seafood Processors Association.

The contingent toured aquaculture sites, including mussel and oyster production areas and processing facilities, as well as a halibut production facility; meeting with industry participants and learning about aquaculture development in PEI.

The group also had the opportunity to experience lobster fishing aboard a local vessel, and to visit lobster processing facilities, learning about the quality, sustainable lobster products from Prince Edward Island.

Additionally, the delegation visited the Culinary Institute of Canada and Canada's Smartest Kitchen, learning about the world class training programs offered at Holland College, and the capacity for product development with award winning chefs Allan Williams and Kimball Bernard.

The mission was sponsored by Agriculture and Agrifood Canada, Innovation PEI, and the Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture, And Rural Development.

Mussel Monitoring Program
The PEI Department of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Rural Development Mussel Monitoring Program is up and running again this spring season. The Program has been running since the development of the mussel industry began in the 1980's and provides valuable information to the mussel growing and processing industries on: the presence, size and quantities of mussel larvae present in the water column, mussel meat yields, the presence and quantities of tunicate larvae and the presence and quantities of potentially toxic algae species from mussel growing areas.

Originally the Program was established to assist the industry in predicting when to set their collectors and has been expanded since them to fit the growing needs of the industry. The program is managed by Gary Smith from the Aquauculture Division. Information from 30 different mussel growing sites across the island is collected on a weekly basis and is available to the mussel industry on our website at www.gov.pe.ca/go/musselmonitoring and on a toll free phone information system at 1-800-454-3233 or locally at 902-368-6510.
