ROLE OF THE MARINE FISHERIES SECTION:
- Acts as an advocate for the PEI fishing industry and participates in the species advisory process with the federal government (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) and industry organizations (PEI Fishermen's Association and PEI Seafood Processors Association).
- Carries out basic biological research in support of major fish species such as lobster as well as support development of emerging species.
- Offers programs to support new technology in the fishery and assists the seafood processing sectors with programs to enhance value-added processing of seafood in PEI.
ROLE OF THE SEAFOOD SERVICES SECTION:
- Provide advice and assistance to clients regarding maintenance of fish quality and the production of top quality seafood products.
- Inspection efforts focus on enforcing regulations under the PEI Fish Inspection Act and the PEI Fisheries Act.
- The following types of licenses are issued: fish processing (primary, secondary, lobster cookroom, groundfish), fish buying and fish peddling.
- Compile and analyse statistics on all aspects of the fishing industry, including landings and values, production, imports and exports and other related information.
- Responsible for the dead mammal removal program from the Island's shore line.
- Responsible for the management and maintenance of shellfish launching sites around PEI.
